Introduction to Nekta Management System Project
Introduction
The 2022 KCSE Computer Project has been
out for a while now. As usual, candidates are required to complete the project
in 7 months. Candidates are expected to submit
their progress twice - the first milestone MUST be completed and score
keyed in by 31st July 2022 and the second milestone similarly
by 30th October 2022. Needless to say, a candidate’s second
milestone should be seen to be building on the first milestone. There is no
particular point in project development that has been specified to demarcate as
the first milestone, it is entirely up to individual candidates to decide
wisely.
This
year's project is titled ‘Nekta Management System’. Candidates
are required to develop a well-documented database system for a beekeeping
accessories, training and honey products-selling company.
The
company, ‘Nekta’ provides the following services:
- Ø Sale of beehive and associated accessories to bee
farmers.
- Ø Setting up of the beehives for the bee farmers.
- Ø Training on beekeeping at Kshs. 7,000 per person.
The
company also:
- Ø Buys honey-related products from bee farmers for
further processing and subsequent sale to consumers.
Key
aspects of Nekta Management system project
- The ability to store (in a table) details of bee farmers.
- The ability to store (in a table) details of scheduled trainings including the farmer paying for training and the number of people to be trained.
- The ability to compute the total cost of each training session/order.
- The ability to store (in tables) details of beekeeping package sales and stand-alone beekeeping accessories sales including payments made by farmers for the same.
- The ability to compute the total cost of each sale of beekeeping package(s) and stand-alone beekeeping accessories including the transport cost where applicable.
- The ability to store (in a table) details of purchases of honey-related products made from farmers.
- The ability to compute the amount to be paid for each purchase order and the mode of payment (Cash, Mobile Money Transfer or Electronic Funds Transfer) to be used.
- The ability to compute sales across the company’s outlined services.
- The ability to compute the company’s transport earnings where applicable i.e., where customers (bee farmers) choose to utilize the company’s transport services for their beekeeping packages and stand-alone beekeeping accessories orders.
- The ability to compute the company’s total income.
- The ability to generate various appropriate reports.
What
you need to come up with a good Movers Transport System project.
This
project is pretty straight-forward and relatively simpler than projects from
the preceding five years. This simplicity presents an opportunity for
flexibility in design and data-processing approaches.
To
develop this project, you’ll need:
A
database management system: Most if not
all schools use Microsoft Windows in their computer labs. I recommend Microsoft
Access 2010 or higher. MS Access 2010 has some important features not available
in Ms Access 2007 such as calculated fields in tables.
Creativity: You have been tasked with computerizing
operations of Nekta Company. Don’t make the common mistake of
developing a half-computerized system - Computerize as much operations as
possible, don't design a calculator!
Solid
planning: This is very important. Don't
be in a hurry. Take your time to visualize how you want your system to look
like, develop a roadmap starting with the basics. Even with a plan, you will
meet a few obstacles but you will be able to go back and make corrections if
you have a plan. In this case, a plan basically involves coming up with the
basic tables and queries you need. See hinted tables above.
Open-mindedness: Projects are rarely 'easy' More often than not,
implementing some question requirements will be a hard nut to crack. Some
concepts you may need to use to complete your project successfully might not have
been taught to you in a classroom scenario. Be curious, utilize the Internet
and other resources to learn new formulae, functions etc.
Security: You can achieve this through
password-protecting your database as well as regularly backing it up. Once you
reach a self-defined milestone, I recommend you save two copies of your Nekta
Management System project and proceed with one copy. This way if you
face hurdles in design or something happens like accidentally deleting a table
or a query, you can always go back to the other copy and proceed from there.
Also
ensure to have copies of your password-protected project at various stages on a
backup storage device/service e.g., a flash drive, CD-RW/DVD-RW disc, Google
Drive, DropBox etc.
